Mark Strong was one of the cast standouts in Matthew Vaughn’s spy adventure Kingsman: The Secret Service.
The latest in the Man Goes Crazy in Space film genre seems to have a new addition. Paramount just released a trailer for Approaching the Unknown, a science fiction thriller starring Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and it looks like a potentially great cross between The Martian, Moon, and Sunshine.
More specifically, Approaching the Unknown follows William D. Stanaforth, an astronaut on a one-way solo mission to Mars. When something goes wrong with the ship’s life support systems, he has some tough (no doubt stressful for us viewers) choices to make. Check out the trailer…
I say the odds are roughly 50 percent that Astronaut Stanaforth is secretly in an Earth-bound basement somewhere. I know how these things work, and I don’t trust your everything-is-mundane vibe, Luke Wilson.
In addition to Strong (who was excellent as sarcastic, but caring mentor Merlin in Kingsman — and who seems poised to play a big role in the spy adventure’s sequel), the film stars: Luke Wilson, Sanaa Lathan, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Charles Baker. It’s written and directed by Mark Elijah Rosenberg, who was a winner of the 2015 Sundance Institute/NHK Award.
Rosenberg has an awesome artist portfolio page focused on his Approaching the Unknown project, which apparently started as an “enduranced-based performance art” piece before transitioning into live-action theater and eventually a feature film.
On the page, Rosenberg writes: “Ad Inexplorata (Approaching the Unknown) is an introspective story about one man and his mission seeking the wonders of the universe.” Sign me up. Approaching the Unknown is scheduled to be released on June 3rd.
